Common Wealth’s Youth Programs seeks two motivated and energetic individuals to join our team as full-time AmeriCorps Members. The AmeriCorps Members will help deliver our youth employment and financial education, job placement, and mentoring programs. Members will provide support and instruction to racially diverse youth from underprivileged backgrounds. Members will gain valuable experience teaching classes, mentoring teens, and planning programs. They will work with a team, develop critical thinking skills, and learn to assess and respond to a variety of situations creatively and deliberately. Common Wealth Development is a non-profit community development organization in Madison, Wisconsin and a member of the Partners for After School Success (PASS) AmeriCorps Program.

Major Responsibilities

  • Co-facilitate and prepare materials for employment and financial education trainings and workshops
  • Recruit youth for the programs and mentor them towards success in school and in the workplace
  • Assist with the coordination of trainings, workshops, field trips and special events, as needed
  • Participate actively in staff meetings to plan programs and troubleshoot challenging situations with youth
  • Network with families, school personnel, volunteers, and staff from other community agencies
  • Maintain written and computer records, perform data entry, complete program and PASS reports
  • Attend weekly AmeriCorps member meetings and professional development trainings (Fridays 9:00-1:00)

Desired Qualifications 

  •  An eagerness to learn, develop a broad skill set, and challenge oneself in a team environment
  • Experience and commitment to working with racially diverse youth from marginalized backgrounds
  • Experience with or willingness to learn effective and engaging facilitation practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Hmong
  • Basic computer skills

AmeriCorps Members qualify for student loan deferment while earning a $6,095 education award to put toward college or student loan payments, and receive a living stipend of approximately $538 (pre-tax) every two weeks. Additional benefits include health coverage, food stamps (if eligible), and child care subsidy (if eligible). Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a high school degree or equivalent; be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident; have a valid driver’s license; and be willing and able to provide at least 1,700 hours of service between September 3, 2019 and August 31, 2020.
